An In Depth Look At The Ever Popular BMX Bikes

May 29th, 2008

Sales of BMX bikes are increasing faster than almost any other type of bicycle. BMX bikes can be seen on every street, sidewalk and even in their natural habitat, off-road. Even if you never leave your house you’ve certainly seen such bikes on TV. Sure, you probably know what a BMX bike is, but what you probably don’t know is what exactly differentiates a BMX bike from other bikes. We’ll tell you how they’re different.

We’ll start with their origin. It’s quite simple, really. Bikes remained pretty much the same for many decades after they were invented, but the popularity of off-road motorcycle racing, or motocross, during the 60’s changed that. Kids saw the pros racing around on their dirt bikes and taking them off dirt ramps. They wanted to be like their heroes so kids imitated them on their bikes, which, at the time, weren’t made for such rough-housing. It didn’t take long for bike manufacturers to catch on and start manufacturing bikes made specifically for the rigors of racing and jumping off-road. Soon there were sanctioned bicycle motocross (BMX) all over the country. The BMX segment of the market grew and grew and continues to expand today. And of course most the kids (and adults) you see on these bikes don’t ever race and probably don’t jump them off anything more daring than a curb. Still though, BMX bikes are made to take a beating.

Hot Air Ballooning Ride the Skies From Dawn till Dusk

May 26th, 2008

My first Hot Air Balloon ride was back in 1997 it seems like a long time ago now but I remember it like yesterday. Getting up at a staggering 4.00 am in the morning and driving to the Balloon Club. I had been given a Day out experience of a lifetime for a birthday present.

As a choice for an extreme sport it seemed the safest option as I had a choice of a parachute jump which I had done previously and can I highly recommend not to do again ever. The other fabulous choice was a diving experience and as I’m already a Divemaster I chose to do the Hot Air Balloon ride.

I drove up to the balloon centre and was welcomed and given the experience which includes the safety talk introduced to the day’s hot air balloon pilot and prospected course and a brief history of the sport of Hot Air Ballooning.

Be a smart paintballer

May 2nd, 2008

The Smart Paintballer Starts With the Equipment First, Then Comes the Fun!

Don’t like being called a newbie? Tip number one: don’t act like a newbie. New paintball players sometimes don’t realize that the game is only fun if you’re well prepared. But get the right outfit, the right gun, and have a basic idea of what you’re doing, and you’ll be fine.

First and foremost, goggles. Wear them. Get the ones specifically made for paintball. Get high-grade ones. Make sure they fit. Because if you get shot in the face and get paint in your eyes because you neglected to wear goggles, you never know how badly your vision could be compromised — and if the resulting injury is bad, you might not be able to play paintball again. After you get the goggles, know how to take care of them. This is true of all of your equipment. Take care of your stuff, and your stuff will take care of you.
